Dominican University hosts international lecture on immigration

Dominican University's Graduate School of Social Work will present a lecture titled "Fear of the Inevitable: What attacks on children of immigrants reveal" on Tuesday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. Carlos Heredia-Ortiz, a long-time activist and educator, will present the lecture in the auditorium of Dominican University's Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division St., River Forest. The lecture will be preceded by a dinner at 5:00 p.m.

The lecture will focus on the impact that immigration enforcement activities is having on children who have undocumented parent(s). Heredia-Ortiz has worked as an organizer in communities, colleges and cities, and he has been involved in immigrants' rights and violence prevention efforts. He supported the farm workers movement led by Cesar Chavez, participated in the Chicano movement and worked on school reform and community policing.

Heredia-Ortiz was born and raised in Mexico City until the age of twelve when his family immigrated to the United States. He attended schools in the Pilsen and Little Village communities and was the first in his family to attend college, attending Harold Washington College and graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He currently serves as coordinator of adult education and violence prevention projects for the Latino Organization of the Southwest (LOS), a Chicago Lawn community-based organization.
