Dominican University hosts lecture on genomic research

Dominican University's Albertus Magnus Society will present a lecture titled "Genomic Research and the Catholic Moral Tradition: Opportunities for a New Synergy Between Science and Religion" by Kevin T. FitzGerald, SJ, PhD. Fitzgerald is the Lauler Chair of Catholic Health Care Ethics in the Center for Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University. The lecture will be held Thursday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Priory Campus Auditorium, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest.

FitzGerald will review the benefits of genetic and genomic research, as well as the likelihood of achieving such benefits. His presentation will follow with an ethical evaluation of proposed research and suggestions for an approach that includes religious perspectives.

FitzGerald is an associate professor in the Department of Oncology at the Georgetown University Medical Center. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Center for Infectious Disease (CID), and the Angiogenesis, Invasion, Metastasis Program at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. FitzGerald obtained two doctorates from Georgetown University in molecular genetics and bioethics. He is also a Jesuit priest and an expert on ethical issues in personalized medicine, pharmacogenomics, human cloning research, stem cell research, and genetic testing.
