Dominican University presents lecture on God’s peace

Dominican University's Siena Center will present its Advent lecture, titled "Is God's Reign of Peace Really Possible?" by Dianne Bergant, CSA. The lecture will be held Thursday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Priory Campus Auditorium, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Passages in the Biblical Book of Isaiah, commonly read during the Sundays of Advent, contain a feeling of anticipation. God initiates a prophetic proclamation of hope for a people in dire straits, suffering some form of deprivation, and discouraged with life. Bergant, a professor of Biblical studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, will discuss God's promises of a new era of peace and harmony.

Bergant holds a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Marian College, Fond du Lac, WI, as well as a master of arts degree and a doctorate in Biblical languages and literature from St. Louis University. She is the former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and is currently on the editorial board of Biblical Theology Bulletin and Chicago Studies. Bergant is working in the areas of Biblical interpretation and Biblical theology, particularly issues of peace, ecology and feminism.

Dominican University established the Siena Center to engage the critical issues of church and society in the light of faith and scholarship. The center was named for St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th century laywoman who worked for the reform of the church and justice in the world. Her passionate devotion to the central issues of church and society inspires the work of the center in its schedule of lectures, symposia, workshops, retreats, research and seminars.
