Keeping Fit in Cold Weather

Mary Maryland, PhD, RN, presents a talk titled, “Keeping Fit in Cold Weather,”  at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave. Dr. Mary, as she’s affectionately called, will present tips on how to keep fit during cold winter months. The public is invited to this free program.

Cold weather and limited daylight can test the resolve of even the most devoted exerciser. For anyone already struggling to find the motivation to stay active, it can be too easy to stay indoors and watch TV when the temperature outdoors is freezing or below.

However, engaging in regular physical activity provides numerous health benefits such as weight control, stronger bones, better cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure,  decreased risk of diabetes, enhanced sleep, and better mood. To maintain these advantages, physical activity should be varied, regular, and year-round.

This is why recommendations such as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans stress that you should accumulate 30 minutes or more of moderate physical activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week.

Dr. Mary will provide good information on exercise ideas and benefits.

The Oak Park Arms is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay - a weekend, a week, a month or longer.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information call Jill Wagner at 708-386-4040 or visit http://www.oakparkarms.com/calendar/2011/january/15/quality-life-health-series-features-keeping-fit-cold-weather.
