Lady Friars Go Cold Against Loyola

Friars misfire in 53-32 home loss.

The short-handed girls basketball team suffered an offensive outage on its home court Thursday night.

The Friars misfired all evening during a 53-32 nonconference loss to Loyola in Oak Park. They made only one of their first 15 shots from the field and finished at 11 for 56 for the game, which comes out to 19.6 percent.

“Good shooting night, huh?” said Fenwick coach Dave Power, whose club is ranked No. 10 by the Chicago Tribune and No. 11 by the Chicago Sun-Times. “We just came out real cold. That’s going to happen.”

The Friars played without their leading scorer, Meredith Boardman. Power said the Yale-bound, 6-foot-1 center broke a school rule.

“We missed her a lot,” he said. “She brings a lot to the table. Anytime you miss her, it hurts.”

Fenwick (5-1) came into the contest averaging 86 points through five games, which included three straight totals of more than 90.

By halftime, the Friars had only 11.

The stat sheet for the first half was ugly for the home team — four for 26 from the field, including two for 15 from three-point territory.

“We shoot like that we’re going to lose to just about anyone,” Power said.

Loyola (4-1) experienced turnovers problems early, but closed the second quarter with a 16-2 run to take a 24-11 lead.

The Ramblers led by as many as 23 in the second half.

“To come in here and beat Fenwick by 20, I don’t think anyone would imagine that,” Loyola coach Jeremy Schoenecker said.

Kathleen Stralka, a 5-foot-10 senior, scored a game-high 21 points on 10-of -15 shooting for the winners. They consistently dodged traps, solved the press and scored inside against the Friars.

“You almost expected them to change something,” Stralka said. “We were breaking their press and when they didn’t react we just kept doing what we were doing and scoring points. It’s a disappointment that they didn’t have Meredith Boardman. You want to beat them when they’re at their best, but I still think we could have gotten them.”

Jade Owens and Maya Garland led Fenwick with eight points apiece.
