Ponce To Take Over OPRF's Girls Soccer Program

The 34-year-old Spanish teacher will replace Paul Wright.

The varsity girls soccer team will have a new coach next season.

Ignacio Ponce found out Thursday that he'll take over as head coach for Paul Wright, who will remain as head coach of the school’s varsity boys team.

Ponce, 34, is a Spanish teacher at the school. This school year, he served as an assistant coach for the sophomore girls team as well as the JV boys coach, a position he will continue to hold.

The Hyde Park resident is excited to take over the respected program.

“I like the game, I know the game and I live the game so it’s an exciting moment,” Ponce said. “It’s nice to know some of the parents already and have them congratulate me tonight.”

The Huskies have reached double figures in wins in each of Wright’s five seasons, which include regional titles in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

“It’s a hard thing to follow,” Ponce said. “He’s set the standard. Why try to fix something that’s working? So I’ll take what he’s put in place and just add on and tweak it.”
