Free Tango Class

Dance instructor Roberta Kuylik will teach the Tango at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in the ballroom at the Oak Park Arms, 408 S. Oak Park Ave. The public is warmly welcome to participate in this free class that promotes exercise and fun.

Originating in Spain or Morocco, the Tango was introduced to the New World by the Spanish settlers, eventually coming back to Spain with Black and Creole influences. In the early 19th Century, the Tango was a solo dance performed by the woman.

Ballroom Tango originated in Buenos Aires. Clothing was dictated by full skirts for the woman and gauchos with high boots and spurs for the man. The dance spread throughout Europe in the 1900's. Originally popularized in New York in the winter of 1911, Rudolph Valentino made the Tango a hit in 1921.

The Oak Park Arms is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay - a weekend, a week, a month or longer.

The class is free and open to the public. Call Jill Wagner at 708-386-4040 or visit http://www.oakparkarms.com.
