Local Sports Playoff Update

A roundup of high school athletics in state tournaments.

Here's to our local student athletes, extra-curricular participants, their parents and coaches.

Wrestling (Dual): After defeating Harlem High School in Saturday's quarterfinals 44-24, the Huskies lost a heartbreaker to Carl Sandburg High School for the Class 3A state championship. The Sandburg Eagles rallied from a 17-3 deficit after five matches to capture the win, 30-24. IHSA Results.

Wrestling (Individual):
106 Pounds: In a 4-3 decision, Matthew Rundell (44-3) lost a championship match to Thornton's Kris Williams (20-2).

120 Pounds: In a 2-0 decision, Larry Early (40-8) won third place against Plainfield Central's Nick Nasenbery (35-7).

152 Pounds: In a 10-4 decision, Davante Mahomes (39-5) won third place against Crystal Lake South's Tom Gerszewski (43-2).

182 Pounds: In a 9-2 decision, Sammy Brooks (37-1) beat Alton's Taylor McGiffen (47-1) for the championship.

Boys Basketball: With a 18-6 overall record, the Huskies finished the regular season as champs in the West Suburban Conference. They'll make their playoff run beginning Tuesday, when they're scheduled to square off Tuesday against the winner of Monday's matchup between LaGrange vs. West Chicago in the regional quarterfinals. Boys Swimming & Diving: Placed 15th overall (tied with Fenwick High School and Aurora's Match & Science Academy) in the state final meet held Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 at Evanston Township High School. Here's a look at the results from the members of the swim team who advanced past the preliminary rounds and into the state finals: Nikita Bondarenko (200 Freestyle - 12th place, 1:43.07; 500 Freestyle - 11th place, 4:36.93), Kyle Patnode (100 Butterfly - 11th place; :51.54; 100 Backstroke - 8th Place, :52.17), Ben Lewis (Diving - 5th Place, 395.65). Girls Basketball: Lost to crosstown rival Trinity (67-38) in the Regional Finals at the LaGrange (Lyons) Sectional. Caroline Kelty (17 points) and Stekara Hall (8 points) led the Hukies scoring effort. Forest Leaves has a game recap.

Chess: The OPRF team placed 44th out of 125 teams at the state chess finals, held in Peoria on Feb. 10-11. The teams finished with 23.15 points. Complete IHSA results.

Boys Basketball: 3A regional quarterfinals action started Monday against Chicago's Little Village.

Wrestling: In a 2-1 overtime decision, Matt Garelli beat Montini's KeVon Powell for the state championship in the 120 pound class, making him the first two-time individual IHSA wrestling state champion in the school's history.

Girls Basketball: Fenwick lost to Trinity (64-45) in the Semifinals in the LaGrange (Lyons) Sectional; did not advance.

Swimming: Placed 15th overall (tied with OPRF and Aurora's Match & Science Academy) in the state final meet, with the team of Justin White (Jr.), Viken Huening (Sr.), Tommy McGuire (Jr.), Dan Kelly (Sr.) capturing fifth place inthe 200 yard freestyle relay.

Chess: The Friars placed 79th out of 125 teams, finishing with 203.5 points.

Girls Basketball: Trinity's basketball team lost to Whitney Young — the state's top ranked team and the second-best team in the country, according to USA Today — in the Sectional Championship 50-45. Wednesday Journal has a recap.

Bowling: Sophomore Tara Quinlan qualified for the state bowling finals, where she placed 102nd out of 126 spots in the Feb. 10 opening rounds in Rockford, finishing with a 178 average after six games.
