OPRF’s Shumpert Out for Playoffs and More

Knee injury deals a blow to local hoops hero Iman Shumpert.

It was a bad weekend for fans of homegrown hoops superstars. 

During the first round of the NBA Playoffs, New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert, of Oak Park, and Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, of Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, were racked by season-ending injuries. 

Shumpert, 21 and a 2008 graduate of , was injured in third quarter of Saturday’s loss to the Miami Heat. ESPN has the video of the injury.

According to multiple media reports, Shumpert injured his left ACL and lateral meniscus and is expected to be “out until the beginning of the 2012-2013 season, at the earliest,” ESPN reports.

Former OPRF basketball coach Al Allen told Wednesday Journal that Shumpert's work ethic could have him back on the court sooner than expected

"Anyone who knows Iman is aware of his outstanding work ethic," he said. "Don't be surprised to see him come back earlier than expected and double his workouts."

Rose, in case you hadn’t heard, suffered a similar, devastating tear to his left ACL during Saturday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers. The injury will sideline the 23-year-old Bulls star for at least the rest of the team's playoff run.
