OPRF Track Athletes Win State Titles

Carl Heinz and Malachy Schrobilgen earn state track and field titles during weekend competition.

Two student athletes finished tops in their categories at this weekend's track and field state tournament.

Carl Heinz and Malachy Schrobilgen, both seniors, bested their competition in the high jump and 3200 meter run, respectively. Overall, the Huskies finished in third place. Here's a look at the Class 3A results.

Heinz, who took first place in last year's tournament, beat his own record by clearing 7 feet 1 inches. Check out the video, it's incredible. Heinz also took fifth place in the triple jump.

Schrobilgen won the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:03.42 — that's almost two miles in just over nine minutes.

The Huskie squad consisting of sophomores Jamal Bagget and Lionel Towns and juniors Zach Booth and Tariq Taylor took second place in the 4x100 relay, losing to Dunbar by a scant .27 seconds.

"The group will return next spring as preseason favorites to win the event," Wednesday Journal reports.
