Kids Bubble Their Pleasure at Wonder Works

Annual Bubble Works extravaganza draws kids to the soapy stuff.

Most kids love bubbles. Most kids, however, do not know why that is.

But the children's museum, 6445 W. North Ave., has set its sights on providing those answers, along with a whole lot of good, clean fun. Literally.

The suds were in sufficient supply Saturday at the museum's annual Bubble Works blow out, an event that aims to inspire children to see the soapy stuff in a different light.

"The idea behind Bubble Works is to show kids different things they can do with bubbles and expose them to things they already know," said Wonder Works education coordinator Jessica Taylor. "They already know what bubbles are, but they're seeing it in a different context."

There was plenty to celebrate for the children, especially on the day where the entire Chicagoland area was recovering from its most recent heat wave. Temperatures lay in the mid-80s, and with a slight breeze — ideal weather for a bubble adventure for youngsters like 5-year-old Jordyn Krezel.

The glasses-clad tot was one of a handful of children who volunteered themselves to stand in the center of a kiddy pool ankle-deep with the slick substance commonly refered to as bubble soap.

And before she knew it, Krezel was swallowed up inside her creation, but not for long. At the flick of her finger, the Lyons resident burst her own bubble.

"I really liked popping the bubble!" Krenzel said, still sopped in soap.

Outdoors in the parking lot, volunteers held demonstrations on the panes of bubble windows, where kids played with bubbles twice their size.

Sara Nimz, 5, of Oak Park, and her pal Amelia Hunkele, 5, of River Forest, both said the bubble demonstrations were, among other things, "really fun."

Wonder Works guest services associate Jacky Manzanares, of Maywood, said watching children such as Nimz and Hunkele, provided her just as much excitement.

"I love kids," Manzanares said. "It's just fun to see them learn and grow. We have kids here constantly and just to see them grow up, it's pretty fun."
