Decline of the Monarchs
Perhaps you’ve heard about the demise of the Monarch butterfly, and if not, the once ubiquitous Monarch is now imperiled and its migratory phenomenon is now considered threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Recently the number of Monarchs that made it to their overwintering numbers was reported, and the numbers were very low. Only 3 million were determined to have reached their ancestral overwintering home on the oyamil firs in Mexico. Many of us feel moved to do something avoid what looks to be their eventual extinction.
Add to these threats climate change, and this tiny creature’s odds at surviving look very slim.
But we humans are optimists and willing to make changes. Now is the time to think about next spring to make a difference to Monarchs and other animals who call Earth home too.

So, it’s December--it’s cold, and the Monarchs are in Mexico, and here we are asking you to think about helping the Monarchs. There are things that can be done now to enact our hope that Monarchs can survive if enough of us humans are willing (and a recent study seems to suggest there are) to make choices that can turn things around for them. The next blog post will outline things that we all can do. It is all of our individual actions and choices that when combined together can make effective and lasting changes that will improve the outlook for Monarchs.
