The City of Homes organization is proud to announce a step forward with their “Heart of Berwyn” Campaign to have our historic bungalows added to the National Register of Historic Places.
it’s a great pleasure to announce that the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency has identified the area roughly bounded by Cermak Road, Ridgeland Avenue, 26th Street, and Home Avenue as a likely candidate for listing in the National Register.
The City of Homes Organization has worked with the City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Historic Preservation Commission to apply for a matching grant to cover the costs of hiring a professional consultant to complete the survey of designated area, perform the required research, complete the nomination form, and represent the City at the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council.

The nomination will create one of the largest Bungalow Districts in the United States. The placement of the area on the National Register will not only help preserve and protect our housing stock, but it will raise awareness of our City’s neighborhood boundaries and historic importance, enhance the Berwyn “brand” which the Berwyn Development Corporation and the “Why Berwyn” advertising campaign have built over the past several years, and pave the way for investments in our City’s homes that can be assisted with available historic rehabilitation tax credits.
