District 201 students receive high marks in AP Spanish

The College Board recently announced the 2013 results of the remaining Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) assessments and 110 students in J. Sterling Morton High School District 201 have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the AP Spanish Language Exam. Of the 145 students who took the exam, 76% or 110 passed with at least a 3. Of the 110 who received at least a 3, 55 students received the highest score of 5.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP. A score of a four or a five on an AP Exam is said to be comparable to an “A” grade earned in an introductory college course at many institutions of higher education. A score of three is said to be equivalent to a grade of a “B” earned at the college level.

“The results just show you the type of education we are providing our students with. These students are in high school but are learning and mastering concepts that are normally taught to college-aged students,” said President of District 201’s Board of Education, Jeff Pesek. “We continually push to provide the highest quality education possible to our students and offering AP courses to our students is just one of the ways we are doing so.”
