Newsweek did not include Oak Park and River Forest High School in its 2013 rankings of best high school's in the U.S.—even though U.S. News & World Report ranked the school #581 in the nation and #25 in Illinois just two weeks ago. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the other ranked high schools by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. The District 200 Board of Education is expected to vote Thursday on whether to stick with the current company it uses for athletic trainers, Athletico, or to go with NovaCare, which has submitted a cheaper bid for its services, according to Wednesday Journal. The cost to continue with Athletico, which provides two athletic trainers for Oak Park and River High School, would be $196,000 for a three-year contract while going with NoveCare wouldcost the school district $126,000, according to the Wednesday Journal. Oak Park & River Forest High School is one of the best public high schools in Illinois, according to rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report. Oak Park and River Forest High School ranked 25th in the state, according to the rankings. U.S. News analyzes data from the 2010-2011 school year from more than 21,000 schools located in 49 states and the District of Columbia to determine the rankings. Nationally, the school was ranked as the 581st top school in the country. The school ranked above the state average for college readiness and math and reading proficiency and was near the state level for student-to-teacher ratio, which was 16 students for every one teacher, according to the rankings. John Johnson will retire Aug. 16 after 10 years at the university, located in River Forest. Concordia outlined his tenure and accomplishments in a news release Monday.

River Forest School District 90 officials continue to seek the community's input on $1 million in improvements at Roosevelt Middle School, which could include renovated parking lots and the addition of lighting and bike racks, according to the Chicago Tribune. A meeting was held this week to inform the community regarding discussions on the project at the school, which the school board delayed in March since "they thought a more extensive dialogue with the community was needed," according to the Tribune.

Noelani Ho, 17, will be headed to a national symposium in Dayton, Ohio from May 1 to 5.
A ballet pointe shoe that "lasts longer, is cheaper and more supportive" has earned Oak Park and River Forest High School student Noelani Ho, 17, first place in the Chicago Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at Loyala University in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune. Ho is now headed to national symposium in Dayton, Ohio from May 1 to 5, according to the article. The shoe she designed is meant to prevent injuries that dancers commonly endure, according to OakPark.com. Playgrounds at Whittier, Mann and Hatch elementary schools will all see upgrades this summer while Irving Elementary School will see extensive work done, which will include a new synthetic turf field and the replacement of its current playground, according to OakPark.com. The District 97 Board of Education in recent weeks has approved the final summer plans for the park as well as an intergovernmental agreeement between District 97 and the Park District of Oak Park , according to OakPark.com. Area schools were on lockdown Monday as a precaution while police searched for suspects in a residential burglary in Oak Park.
Updated 6:30 p.m. March 20 Oak Park police charged two men in connection with a residential burglary Monday and are searching for a third possible suspect. A police squad car was heavily damaged in the incident. Angel Reyes, 24, of the 7500 block of Washington Street in Hanover Park, and Justin Cortez, 18, of the 600 block of N. Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, were both charged with residential burglary and criminal damage to state-supported property. The men are being held in Oak Park pending a bond hearing Thursday. Police say a third suspect might have fled on foot. He is described as a black male in his late teens or early 20s, about 5-foot-9 and wearing dark clothing and a knit hat.
