Housed on the second floor of the Pleasant Home (aka the John Farson house in Mills Park), the Historical Society of OakMore Park and River Forest is home to a treasure trove of artifacts and a gold mine for local history buffs. Several of the Pleasant Home's bedrooms serve as museum exhibit space for both temporary programs, such as "Fighting for Women's Rights: A History of West Suburban National Organization of Women," to permanent exhibits like "Tarzan, Mars and the Fertile Mind of Edgar Rice Burroughs." The Historical Society also houses the Gale Research Center, a room available to the public (typically by appointment and for a fee) that's packed with historical materials, including local newspaper archives, genealogy documents, donated personal photographs, census records, oral histories, maps and much more. Staffers can also provides fee-based archive research for those looking to learn more about a specific subject.
