Housed in the basement of the First United Church, the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry has been a source ofMore emergency food for families in need since the 1970's.

In 2009, demand peaked. The pantry responded by providing meat, dairy and produce to 11,088 families — that's 40,422 people, organizers said.

While demand at the pantry has increased, so too have the fundraising efforts of the pantry's leaders, who partner with a host of religious and civic groups to provide the food.

Billing its leaders and congregation alike as "an open community united in love and justice," the First United ChurchMore of Oak Park was founded in 1975 when members of two denominations — Presbyterian and the United Church of Christ — combined.

The church observes creeds from both faiths, invites members of all demoninations and welcomes the gay, lesbian and bisexual community.

The church building is also home to Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, the walk-in ministry, a "cluster tutoring" program and a nursery school. It also hosts the PADS homeless ministry two nights a week.
