Learning To Run: Dealing With A Motivation Problem
Our summer intern talks about training for the Race for the Cure 5K.
I want so bad to be a “good” runner. Right now, I’m training for my first 5K; specifically, the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure in Chicago in September. The race has a special meaning for me. My mom, who’s just 46, is going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. She has such a positive outlook and is always upbeat. I thought the least that I could do, other than be a supportive daughter, would be to help raise awareness, even if it’s just in a small way. I’m having the most trouble with motivation, which really perplexes me. I know my major problem is just making excuses: I’m too tired, I’m too busy, I’m too whatever. Then I get mad at myself for all of the above, because I have no room to complain. I have my health and the ability to …
