Oak Park Takes Bite out of Apple

MacSpecialist, which opened Monday, will sell nearly all Apple products but repair all.

More than a year after Oak Park suggested the notion of bringing an Apple store to Oak Park, the idea finally has borne fruit. MacSpecialist, billing itself as the premiere Apple reseller in the Chicago metro area, has opened at 805 Lake St., the former site of a Baird & Warner real estate office. All manner of products like iPads and Mac computers, as well as third-party accessories, will be sold there, except for the iPhone. But the phone can be serviced there, store manager Justin Thomas said. Folks for the first time can play with Apple products instead of having to take a ride to Oak Brook or jump on the El and head for Chicago. Thomas said last year Oak Park contacted Apple about opening a store that would offer an entire line of …

At Borders, Customers Seek Deals and Lament Closing

Store could be closed for good by September.

Customers have been streaming into the Borders store steadily, looking to find going-out-of-business sale deals for books, games, music and crafts. And if you didn’t know any better, you’d think the store at 1144 Lake St. is doing better than ever — except for the big red and yellow signs announcing the store closing. A Borders spokeswoman said the company's roughly 400 remaining stores should be closed by the end of September. In Oak Park, that means 28 people will be out of a job. Monday Deadline To Suggest Borders Backup

Oak Park leaders seek feedback on a new tenant at Harlem and Lake.

What would you like to see replace the Borders book store at Harlem and Lake? That's the key question Oak Park business and political leaders are asking in a survey as the once-mighty book retailer at 1144 Lake St. departs a very visible commercial corner. Related: OP-RF Patch coverage of Borders Here's the survey, which officials said is based on solicitations they've received through various social media channels. It's important to note that while Oak Park officials can't select the building's next tenant, they say "input from residents may be of value to the building management company in its marketing efforts." Oak Park officials have already said they're angling hard for an Apple store. Twitter chatter and Facebook comments indicate …

Rounding up the best in local news, this and every week.

We can't be everywhere and neither can you. The "Week in Review" is designed to bring you up to speed on local news in Oak Park and River Forest. Let's get to it: Resident Missing: Friends, family and others are conducting a community-wide effort to look for Jassen Strokosch, a 39-year-old Oak Parker who was reportedly last seen at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Cermak Road and Des Plaines Avenue in Forest Park. Volunteers have been passing out leaflets at El stations. Others have been looking in areas from the Austin neighborhood to Thatcher Woods in River Forest for the Irving Park School parent and co-chair of the District 97's successful referendum campaign. An Apple Store in Oak Park?

Village, development officials will recruit Apple to fill Borders site.

Oak Park would like to take a bite out of the apple, Steve Jobs’ Apple that is. Village officials and local business leaders say they'll begin luring Apple to the anchor location that currently houses Borders, Village Manager Tom Barwin said. How much longer the former book giant will be there is uncertain. The embattled company has announced it will likely close its remaining 399 stores, including the location at 1144 Lake St. Apple, Barwin said, is the "logical" successor for the space. “It’s got visibility, and Borders established a traffic pattern for those who pursue intellectual property and entertainment in the region," he said. Another reason to bring Apple here, Barwin said, stems from conversations around town about residents …
