VIDEO: Oak Park's Iman Shumpert has Dunk of the Playoffs

The OPRF grad and New York Knick slammed home a put-back dunk in the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers.

Oak Park native Iman Shumpert got a fair amount of publicity his rookie season for his strong perimeter defense, and later for tearing his ACL in the first game of the playoffs, the same day Derrick Rose did. And though the Chicago Bulls' star is still on the bench, Shumpert has been playing since January and last week got even more publicity after slamming home what's likely the dunk of the playoffs.  The Knicks' Chris Copeland missed a shot off the back of the rim, and no Pacers player went for the rebound. That opened a lane for Shumpert, who flew through the paint, caught the ball with one hand and threw down a big-time dunk.  Check it out on YouTube in the video above. The nominees for Athlete of the Week: Glenbrook North's Jim McPike, Niles West's Dashae Shumate, Maine West's Brittany Collins, New Trier's Sam Stoddart and Maine South's Michael Zadlo.

More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. Shumate had 12 points in the victory and helped Niles West move into first …

Your Turn: Vote for Patch Athlete of the Week

The nominees for Athlete of the Week: New Trier's Maggie Lyon, Deerfield's Zach Cole, Niles West's Ryan Miller, Niles North's Billy Voitik and Highland Park's Jake Zuckerman.

More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22: Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. Cole averaged a score of 228.36 in the Northern Illinois Boys Bowling Conference this year. (Watch a video of Cole, perfect game, here.) UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

With more than 15,000 votes cast, find out who won this week's Patch Athlete of the Week.

More than 15,000 votes were counted last week and Deerfield's Alex Sacks was proclaimed this week's Athlete of the Week. Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. The senior had four points in the fourth quarter to lead Deerfield in a late-game comeback.  The Deerfield basketball star received more than 7,500 votes, or about 48 percent. Honorable Mention: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

With more than 1,500 votes cast, find out who won this week's Patch Athlete of the Week.

More than 1,500 votes were cast in last week's contest and Maine South's Nina Duric was proclaimed the winner.  Duric led the Hawks’ balanced scoring attack with 14 points and nine rebounds in Maine South’s 55-43 win over Champaign Centennial to claim the State Farm Holiday Classic title. This marks the first time Maine South has won the championship in school history. The Maine South basketball star received more than 700 votes, or about 47 percent. Honorable Mention: Malachi Nix, junior, basketball guard, Niles North – Nix had 13 points in the first quarter and 23 for the game in Niles North’s 62-48 win over Vernon Hills in the Wheeling Hardwood Classic consolation game. In another big turnout, see who took home this week's honor as Athlete of the Week!

More than 12,000 votes were cast in last week's contest for Athlete of the Week and Loyola's Michelle Ricolcol came out the winner.  Ricolcol scored 14 points – all in the second half – to lead the Ramblers to a 47-40 win over St. Ignatius on Dec. 16. That brought Loyola Academy's record to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference. Ricolcol garnered more than 9,000 votes or 74 percent of all ballots cast.  The rest of last week's nominees were: Jacqui Grant, junior, girls basketball, Maine South – Grant had 17 points and 10 rebounds against CSL South-leading Glenbrook South in a 45-39 victory last week. Sounds like more whiny spoiled North Shore parents and family members to me. Maybe the process is wrong, but if someone needs this silly "award" to boost their self-esteem, or worse yet, a parent's self esteem, then they have issues far greater than worrying about this voting process to say the least. Another hotly contested poll. See who came out on top and won Athlete of the Week!

Almost 600 votes were cast and in the end Deerfield's Michael Alfieri claimed this week’s Athlete of the Week title.  Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 victory.  Alfieri captured 264 votes, or 44 percent. The contest literally came down to the wire, with Alfieri and Glenbrook North's Mark Johnson tied with the same amount of votes just hours before Sunday's voting deadline (midnight).
