A Chicago man has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault after River Forest Police said he attacked a female acquaintance in her home with a sword. Kenneth W. Merrills, 20, of the 6000 block of North Richmond, was arrested around 7:45 a.m. Thursday in the 8000 block of Lake Street in River Forest, police said. The victim, 43, called police after escaping from her home, where police said Merrills sexually and physically assaulted her with the sword during the late evening Wednesday and early morning Thursday. She told police that Merrills was still inside her home and armed with the sword. An Oak Park woman was charged with three separate counts of battery after she slapped her child repeatedly and then hit the officer who responded to the incident, police said. Colleen A. Mulvihill, 45, of the 800 block of Highland in Oak Park, was charged with domestic battery/bodily harm, aggravated battery of a child and battery. Det. Sgt. Michael Richardson said police received a call from the child's father at about 5:07 p.m. Feb. 19. According to the police report, Mulvihill slapper her daughter in the face a dozen times, pulled her hair and pushed her to the floor. Oak Park police reported this evening that they arrested and later charged a 48-year-old Oak Park man after he allegedly hit a 13-year-old boy from Cicero in the face and made comments about the boy's race. Luisito B. Navarro, of the 1100 Block of south Gunderson, was charged with aggravated battery and a hate crime, both felonies, on Jan. 10. The arrest stems from an incident police said occurred in an alley behind the 1100 block of south Gunderson at about 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 8. Four young men have been charged in connection with the beating and robbery of a 14-year-old boy. The attack took place around 5:40 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Wisconsin Avenue, when police say the four attackers approached the teen from behind. One of them, Devin Weaver, 19, of Glen Ellyn, threw the victim to the ground and began punching. The other three — identified as Rodrick Smith and Lavert Horne, both 17-year-old Berkeley residents, and 19-year-old James Burns of Bellwood, — quickly piled on with kicks and punches. Investigation, parent cooperation lead to battery charge.
An 11-year-old boy accused of hitting, tripping and bruising a female classmate at Percy Julian Middle School has been charged with battery, authorities said. According to police reports, the 11-year-old struck another child in the face during school on May 19 at Percy Julian Middle School, prompting outrage from the 13-old-victim's mother, who told Wednesday Journal school officials were "dragging their feet" in disciplining the alleged aggressor.
