Lillie Henderson's first goal of season propels Blazers past Regina Dominican 3-0.
Lillie Henderson’s first goal of the season was an important one. The senior’s header gave the Trinity girls soccer team an early lead against Regina Dominican Friday afternoon. The host Blazers added two goals in the second half to register a 3-0 Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Red Division victory at Triton College in River Grove. The win kept Trinity’s division title hopes alive. The Blazers (9-3-2, 3-1-1) play at Red leader Loyola on Monday. Trinity got off to a good start thanks to Henderson, who used her head on a corner kick to give her team a 1-0 lead. She scored five times a year ago, but has been asked to focus more on defense this season. “I was really excited because my whole goal this year was to just score since I’m …
Blazers rely on bats to beat Glenbard South 13-8.
The Trinity softball team continues to crank out the hits. The Blazers produced 11 hits en route to thumping host Glenbard South 13-8 in a matchup of recent postseason rivals in Glen Ellyn on Wednesday afternoon. The teams have met in the Class 3A playoffs in each of the past two seasons. Glenbard South (8-2) beat Trinity (13-1) in the supersectionals in 2009 before the Blazers returned the favor in sectionals in 2010. Trinity ended the suspense of this one early by rolling seven runs across the plate in the top of the second inning and five more in the third to take a 12-0 lead. Eight of the nine starters hit safely and the other reached on a walk. “I think we’re one of the best hitting teams in the state,” Trinity coach Bob Osborne …
Blazers earn 4-1 milestone victory over OPRF at Triton College.
Trinity’s on-the-rise softball program has achieved a lot, including a second-place showing in Class 3A last year and a Top 10 ranking in the Chicago area this season. One thing the Blazers hadn’t done, however, is beat Oak Park-River Forest High School. Until Tuesday, that is. Trinity added a milestone victory to its expanding list of accomplishments by beating the Huskies 4-1 at Triton College in River Grove. “We’ve been talking a lot about being the best in the area and they’ve been the best in the area for the last 10 years and Morton was for 10 years before that so our goal now is to take the next 10,” Trinity coach Bob Osborne said. “This was a step we needed to take. I’m excited." “Every year we come into this game and it’s one of…
Proviso East avenges regular-season loss with a 55-47 triumph over the Blazers in the Class 4A York sectional final.
Unfortunately for the Trinity girls basketball team, revenge remained the story of the Class 4A York sectional. All three sectional games saw the winner avenge a regular-season loss. Proviso East did so again Thursday night, knocking off the Blazers 55-47 to win the sectional championship in Elmhurst. During the regular season, Trinity (28-5) beat Proviso East 64-60 on Dec. 28 in the Suburban Holiday Showcase at Niles West. “It definitely was a lot more physical this time,” said Trinity junior forward Megan Podkowa, sporting a swollen bruise under her left eye from a shot she took in the second quarter that caused her to temporarily leave the game. “I don’t think it was anything like this last game, and I think the pressure that we felt …
Blazers hang on for 62-54 victory in the Class 4A York sectional semifinals.
The Trinity girls basketball team did not let history repeat itself. When the Blazers saw Bartlett chop their second-half lead from 18 to 3, they stopped the bleeding this time, scoring the final 5 points of the game to hang on for a 62-54 victory in the Class 4A York sectional semifinals Tuesday night in Elmhurst. Back on Nov. 23, Bartlett came from behind in the second half to beat Trinity 61-50 in the Naperville Central/Benet Tip-Off Tournament. “We really stuck together at the end of the game,” Trinity junior forward Megan Podkowa said. “We made it through their run. That was the biggest difference from the last game. I was like, ‘Girls, calm down. They’re coming back at us. We’ve had this experience before. Now we know what to do.’ ” …
Blazers top West Chicago 58-39 to capture ninth straight regional championship.
The Trinity girls basketball team passed its screen test. The Blazers clamped down defensively on West Chicago’s screen-laden offense to defeat the Wildcats 58-39 in the Class 4A Trinity regional final Thursday night in River Forest. “They’re an unbelievable, cohesive offensive group,” Trinity coach Ed Stritzel said of the Wildcats. “They want to run nine million screens. They want to catch you finally on a little flex cut. I thought our patience defensively was just tremendous in that first half. The intensity was just unbelievable.” Trinity (27-4) willed the game in its favor with a strong defensive effort on a night when its offense started slowly. West Chicago (17-11) held a 7-6 lead six minutes into the game as the home team struggled…
