Area schools were on lockdown Monday as a precaution while police searched for suspects in a residential burglary in Oak Park.
Updated 6:30 p.m. March 20 Oak Park police charged two men in connection with a residential burglary Monday and are searching for a third possible suspect. A police squad car was heavily damaged in the incident. Angel Reyes, 24, of the 7500 block of Washington Street in Hanover Park, and Justin Cortez, 18, of the 600 block of N. Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, were both charged with residential burglary and criminal damage to state-supported property. The men are being held in Oak Park pending a bond hearing Thursday. Police say a third suspect might have fled on foot. He is described as a black male in his late teens or early 20s, about 5-foot-9 and wearing dark clothing and a knit hat. Marelli Gold & Diamond Exchange was burglarized just a week after Kuba Jewelers was broken into.
Just a week after Kuba Jewelers was burglarized, another jewelry business in Oak Park suffered a loss. Oak Park police said Marelli Gold & Diamond Exchange, 6800 Roosevelt Rd., was broken into at 2:38 a.m. Friday, March 1. A man was seen on video surveillance breaking the door by throwing a pipe wrench through it. The man then use the wrench to break display cases. He was seen removing various items and ran westbound on Roosevelt. Police said the estimated damage is $700, but the loss of the merchandise was not immediately known. The following individuals are listed under the Cook County Warrants Search for the zip codes 60301 and 60302: Darryle L. Hughes, 46, is wanted on a charge of credit card fraud. There was no bail set. His last known address was the 900 block of West North Boulevard in Oak Park. The warrant was issued Dec. 9, 2004. Anthony Brown, 24, is wanted on a charge of unlawful use of weapon. There was no bail set. His last known address was the 400 block of North Clinton in Oak Park. The warrant was issued Oct. 16, 2008. Katrice L. Campbell, 24, is wanted on a charge of criminal trespass to residence. Her bail was set at $5,000. Her last known address was the 900 block of North Humphrey Avenue in Oak Park. SATURDAY, DEC. 29 Jeanette M. Conrad, 40, of Corydon, IN, was arrested and charged around 9 a.m. with driving with a suspended license, no insurance and no registration after police pulled over her vehicle near Chicago and William avenues for having expired registration. SUNDAY, OCT. 28 An Oak Park resident reported that their vehicle was broken into and burglarized in the 600 block of Highland between 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27 and 7:18 a.m. Oct. 28. Someone broke the driver's side window and stole a dashboard radio. The loss was estimated at $170. Denny's, in the 700 block of north Harlem, reported that two women consumed food and then left the restaurant without paying at 2:45 a.m. The two left and entered a vehicle that was reported stolen in Chicago and fled in an unknown direction. Man poses as ComEd worker after storm, then tried to scam elderly couple.
An elderly Oak Park couple nearly had their home burglarized after a man came to the door posing as a ComEd worker. Following strong storms the morning of July 11, the couple said a man aproached their home, said he needed to check the home’s electrical connections, made his way inside and then radioed to someone, according to Oak Leaves. The homeowners grew suspicious and demanded ID, which prompted the would-be scammer to run away.

Five addressed experiences, shared tips during Oak Park crime prevention workshop.
On May 1, 2011, Oak Park residents reported three break-ins: two to garages and the third to a car. On June 1, burglars hit a house and a car; another vehicle was stolen outright. On Thursday, June 2, a panel of experts – all currently incarcerated for burglary - told Oak Park residents about their experiences and provided rare insights into the crimes and how to avoid them. The discussion was part of the Safer Foundation’s “Keepin’ It Real” program, started by Chicago Police Officer Maudessie Jointer about five years ago to connect low-level offenders with the community in constructive ways. Victim kicks back, home ransacked and a motorist drives off after hitting a child, authorities say.
Hit-and-Run Arrest A 29-year-old Oak Park man was charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that sent a young boy to the hospital, police said. Marcus Backstrom was behind the wheel of a 2001 Buick LeSabre around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of South Taylor Avenue when he struck an 8-year-old boy crossing the street, authorities said. Witnesses told police the impact sent the boy into the air, then back onto the pavement. He was taken to Loyola Medical Center with cuts and bruises, police said. Backstrom told police he didn't feel any impact and kept driving, eventually reaching his home in the 1100 block of South Austin Boulevard, where he was arrested. Police searching for clues in string of recent burglaries.
Four garages were burglarized between March 10 and 11, three of which happened within several blocks of one another in north Oak Park. According to police reports, here's the timeline: A fourth garage burglary in the 700 block of South Grove Avenue, which took place about one day earlier than the north Oak Park incidents, netted a GPS, guitar and guitar case, but police don't believe there's a connection to the cluster of break-ins in north Oak Park.
