Goodbye, Dignity; Hello, New Visitors

A rookie takes on the catwalk.

When I started considering my invitation to strut down the makeshift catwalk at the Oak Park-River Forest Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Oak Park fashion show, my palms would sweat. Butterflies would knock around in my gut. This really wasn't my thing. Still, I was honored to be named a "Model Citizen" and any chance to promote Patch is a good one. (New here? Welcome. Have a look around. We're kind of awesome, and that's because of you.) So back to the fashion show. Included in the lineup were dozens of women, a few little kids and five guys. Before the show, which took place at the Oak Park Arms April 12, the ladies sipped wine backstage and got runway-ready; the guys waited in a back office filled with a giant birdcage, lots of small …

There have been some really cool shopping app recommendations over the past couple of days...I ended up downloading the 'Should I Buy It?' app someone recommended and it is awesome! I was shopping for shoes and was able to quickly share them with my friends to see what they thought of them. Here is the link again to download: http://bit.ly/sibifm33   more ›

Week in Review

Friday already? Here's what you may have missed.

We can't be everywhere and neither can you. Our new "Week in Review" is designed to bring you up to speed on local news in Oak Park and River Forest. Let's get to it:  The Paris Wife: The relationship between Ernest Hemingway and first wife Hadley Richardson is explored in The Paris Wife, a fictionalized account by author Paula McClain. The author, by the way, will appear at the Ernest Hemingway Museum in Oak Park on March 10, signing copies of the book. (via npr.org) The Worst News Ever (If You're a Kid): The River Forest Public Schools District 90 Board of Education approved a plan that expands the school day — 45 more minutes at Lincoln and Willard elementary schools; six more minutes at Roosevelt Middle School. Oh, and the teachers in …

We're On a Roll

Oak Park-River Forest Patch is just getting started.

We've been hard at work here at Oak Park-River Forest Patch, scouring for stories and doing a bit of shameless promotion at the Oak Park Farmers Market, where we handed out about 100 of our nifty heavy-duty canvas bags. If you haven't yet met our team, swing by the About Us page and have a look. Most of our contributors are local folks, and that's no accident. We're assembling a team of local reporters and writers who are plugged into the Oak Park and River Forest communities. (If you'd like to contribute, simply drop me a line. If you've got a lead on a good story, please be sure to tip your editor.) Just this week, we've tracked the meteoric rise of the Dominican Stars soccer team, explained a referendum question facing Oak Park voters, …

Thoughts on Our First Month

We've been working hard to provide you with stories. How are we doing?

When Patch first set out in Oak Park and River Forest, I fielded lots of questions from residents, business leaders and assorted shotcallers throughout the area. What, they wanted to know, was this local news venture all about? What will we cover? Will we only post good news? Are we going to pick fights with the other papers in town? Along the way, I've explained that we're covering everything a local newspaper would cover and that we'll strive to provide responsible, interesting news stories — and we'll publish them all on a clean website that's designed for interactivity. It's only been a month, but I hope we've delivered. Our reporters have been scouring the towns for news, and we've already got dozens of stories live on the site. There…

Why Patch?

You've got questions. We've got answers.

At first, I thought the woman was fawning. It was during a conversation I'd half-heard during a recent meet-and-greet with the new school superintendent of District 97. She was going on and on about Oak Park, about what a truly great place it is and how there's no place in the world like it. I'm a pretty skeptical guy, so I thought maybe she was kissing up to an official who might have been her new boss. Then it struck me that she wasn't kidding.  This conversational love song about her town was genuine. She was positively beaming about everything Oak Park -- about the village, the people, the schools, the teachers and the students. And it is a nice place, this diverse, urban, responsible community. People flock here because of those …
