South Marion District to Rebrand with New Name

Renovated area to become Pleasant District in an effort to connect to local history.

After the $5.4 million facelift on South Marion Drive is finished, the area will also boast a brand new name: Pleasant District. An association board decided to rename the South Marion District to connect it with historic Pleasant Home, as well as give the area a more cohesive feel. “This initiative, essentially we wanted to create a more connected and distinctive district,” Carli Gini of Serenity Partners told TribLocal. Earlier: South Marion to Get $5.4 Million Facelift The Pleasant District board, formerly the South Marion Association, will launch a marketing plan to generate name recognition. Lincoln Expansion Inches Forward

Addition of two floors to give students and teachers more room.

Lincoln has been feeling the stress of a growing student population for years, said Oak Park Elementary District 97 Assistant Superintendent Therese O’Neill, noting this past year there were five kindergarten classes at the school. After Long Delays, Huskies Dive In

High school pool reopens following construction, inspection problems.

Huskies swim coach Peter Quinn said members of the Oak Park-River Forest High School boys swim team were about to board a bus Wednesday for another long slog to Morton East, where the team was forced to practice during renovations to their home pool.  Then the longtime swim coach learned of a surprise — ORPF's pools had finally passed a state health inspection.  "It came as sort of a surprise and a shock," Quinn said. "My intial reaction was that I wasn't really sure what to do."  While the news startled Quinn, it energized the 30-plus boys who "started high-fiving and ran into the locker room and you just heard this huge eruption," he said.  Naturally, the team then took about a 20-minute dip.  Thursday the swim team held its first after-…

Renovating Roosevelt Road

Officials pledge $8.3 million to give corridor a makeover.

Roosevelt Road is getting a makeover, courtesy of Uncle Sam, IDOT and west suburban local governments. The reconstruction is expected to revitalize the corridor between Austin Boulevard and Harlem Avenue, a 1.5 mile stretch that touches parts of Oak Park, Berwyn and Cicero. On Sept. 3, officials from those three towns, as well as Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL), leaders from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and workers from International Operating Engineers Local 150 were on hand to announce the renovation project, which carries a nearly $8.3 million price tag.  IDOT Secretary Gary Hannig offered the following cost breakdown:  Renovations will include repairing curbs, widening sidewalks and repaving the roadway…
