Dominican University Energy Program Sees Savings

University and utility officials say installation of steam system on River Forest campus to save energy.

For years, Dominican University has relied on an energy-gobbling boiler system to heat and cool a small handful of buildings at the school's River Forest campus. That began to change about two years ago, when university officials opted to eliminate the need for the boiler in the summer through a partnership with Plainfield-based DRF Trusted Property Solutions to create a custom energy system. The project fell under the umbrella of the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program, which offers rebates for customers that install certain energy-saving products. Now, university officials say they've already started seeing the savings. Last month, leaders with Nicor and DRF gathered at the school's Rebecca Crown Library to hand over a rebate check …

And Now...Kids with Rockets

Dominican University's "gifted and talented" program earns rave reviews during rocket launches

Patch paid a visit to Constitution Park in River Forest on Friday, where a handful of kids were eagerly anticipating the launch of model rockets into the summer sky. Some flew more than a thousand feet in the air and returned to earth in a slow float. Others were carried into the trees. At least one shot straight sideways after launch. It was part of Dominican University's Summer Gifted and Talented Program, a series of summer classes designed to "serve the academic and social needs of highly motivated gifted and talented students entering grades 2-8 in the Fall with enriching and challenging instruction that is rooted in discovery-based learning, differentiated instruction and assessments, flexible grouping, hands-on activities, real …

Dominican University Offers Scholarly Backdrop for PBS Documentary

River Forest campus offers public television film crew a scenic setting.

Why, doesn't this sound fun. Peter Sagal, Oak Parker and beloved host of National Public Radio's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! is hosting a forthcoming PBS series titled The Constitution, which will bring Sagal across the country to talk about, you guessed it, the Constitution of the United States. One of those stops brought the film crew to the picturesque confines of Dominican University, where they shot scenes at the school's Cloister Walk and inside the Noonan Reading Room. "The campus has that academic feel to it," Sagal told a school spokesman."I was familiar with Dominican, and I'm happy that it worked out for us to come here." According to Insignia Films, the four-hour series, a co-production of Twin Cities Public Television and PBS, …

Nobody Gets Out of Here Without Talking 'Bout the Blues. And Race. And Gender.

Symposium at Dominican University will tackle issues of race and equality in blues music.

"The blues are the roots. Everything else is the fruits." It's been a long time since blues legend Willie Dixon said that, and the country has made many strides in equality, music and social justice. But what about within the world of blues music? That's one of the main questions to be discussed at this weekend's symposium held at Dominican University. The forum, a biannual event at the university, will bring together scholars, musicians, writers and more to "explore the shared roots of blues and gospel music and their enduring impact on contemporary music and society." The focus will be on race and gender issues in modern blues.  "It doesn't help," writes Chicago Tribune arts critic Howard Reich, "that blues artists toil in a music …
