The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken drivingat least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. TUESDAY, APRIL 9 Man With Weed Flees Stranded Car Darren P. Knutson, 35, of the 1400 block of N. Fairfield Ave. was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license. Police responded to a call reporting a stranded car near the intersection of Hawthorne St. and Thatcher St. The driver, Knutson, left the car along with a juvenile companion. They were later found and police discovered Knutson had 21 grams of marijuana and a glass smoking pipe on him, police said. A records check indicated that he was also driving on a suspended license. SUNDAY, APRIL 7 Nicholas Stevic, 18, of the 900 block of S. Home Ave. was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and other traffic offenses after police saw him speeding on the 1400 block of Harlem Ave. at approximately 12:51 a.m. Police reports say Stevic had slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests. He refused to take a breathalyzer test. After police took him into custody, they found a replica Beretta semi-automatic BB gun, duct tape and a hammer in his car.
