Turbulent Week For Fenwick Ends With A Loss

Bishop McNamara blocks kick, beats the Friars 21-13.

A turbulent week for the Fenwick football program ended in heartbreak Saturday night. After putting itself in position to tie the game upon scoring a dramatic touchdown with less than two minutes remaining, Fenwick’s excitement was quickly doused by disappointment when its extra-point kick was blocked. Bishop McNamara went on to beat the Friars 21-13 in a Chicago Catholic League White Division opener at Morton West High School in Berwyn. “It’s kind of devastating,” newly-installed Fenwick coach Scott Thies said about seeing the chance to tie the game blocked. “That’s part of football.” Thies, who's in his first year as the school’s athletic director, replaced former head coach Joe DiCanio, who was asked to resign earlier in the week …

Years Later, Vietnam Vet Shares Experience

Fenwick grad Earl Gorman set to speak at weekend memorial events.

Earl Gorman was working in his office in downtown Chicago in 1986 when he noticed the Chicago Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Parade moving through the city streets. Hurriedly, he threw together a uniform of sorts, fastened some insignia to his top, and joined in with the 200,000 veterans and their family members marching through the city. An estimated 300,000 spectators cheered for those in uniform that day, among the first wide scale, organized recognitions for veterans of the controversial conflict. “We were treated pretty poorly when we got back. The whole country was against us," said Gorman, aFenwick High School graduate. "And I was proud to be over there, fighting communism.” Twenty five years after the parade, he'll get a chance to …

The noise emanating from the Fenwick girls softball team’s dugout in the bottom of the fifth told the story. The Friars came alive after breaking a tie with three runs in the inning. The offensive outburst brought much-needed relief in the form of a 6-2 East Suburban Catholic Conference triumph over St. Viator Thursday at the Priory in River Forest. “It was definitely a big relief, you know,” winning pitcher Olivia Soja said of the rally that enabled the Friars to snap a six-game losing streak. “It’s just nice to finally have some pressure taken off.” “It was a slump that I think every team goes through,” said Friars shortstop Natalie Marotta, who went two for three and scored twice. “It’s just something you’ve got to come out of. It’s …
