We spotted a film crew using Randolph Street Barber Shop as a location on Thursday for an herbicide commercial that will air in North Dakota. Go figure.
A Naperville-based marketing company was in town on Thursday shooting a commercial that will air in western markets for a Bayer brand crop herbicide. We snapped a picture of the crew setting up at Randolph Street Barber Shop, 201 Marengo Ave., today around 11:30 a.m. According to Jim Meyers, creative director at Rhea and Kaiser, the footage shot today will be used to promote Bayer's herbicides in Montana and North Dakota. "Yeah, wheat county," Meyers said. When finished, the commercial will feature the barbershop and a home in River Forest, but will be made to look like they were shot out west. "We're shooting around Chicago now and then we'll use already shot footage from North Dakota later," Meyers said. The commercial will air only in …

This weekend, the menu at Shanahan's Creole Restaurant and Irish Bar gets hoppy.
Shanahan's Creole Restaurant and Irish Bar in Forest Park is cooking with beer this weekend—quite literally. The weekend's beer-centric menu features a range of hearty items designed to tempt you taste buds and make your winter weary soul happy. "It's January, so we're focusing on hearty dishes," said Randy Toledano, manager at Shanahan's. "We've got some interesting beers in this month." In addition to grabbing one of a variety of microbrews, Shanahan's is adding beer to pretty much all of it's weekend Beerfest menu options. For example, the cooks are serving up Corona beer battered shrimp, brown ale brined chicken wings with a Hacker Pschorr honey mustard sauce and Hacker Pschorr marinated grilled bratwurst. They're also mixing in some …

St. Bernardine plans to end the school year in early June after 98 years in operation.
St. Bernardine School, the only Catholic school in Forest Park, will be closing its doors in June after 98 years in service. Declining enrollment and the amount of money needed to operate the school were cited as the reasons for closing their doors, principal Veronica Cash said Friday. The school is located at 815 Elgin Ave. The last day of school for first through seventh graders will be June 7. Eighth graders will graduate May 31. Families learned about the closing Thursday night from officials with the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools as part of a parents' meeting. "We're saddened by the news," said Cash, who has been the principal at St. Bernardine's since the summer. "A lot of our children have been here since they were 3 years…

Get trained and then help count in Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park to determine level of need and funding.
Volunteers are needed to help determine the scope of suburban homeless in the area. The biennial census will be conducted in the early morning hours of Jan. 24 through Jan. 26 around Cook County, including Oak Park. Teams of volunteers will fan out to shelters and other locations to conduct the count. They also will be looking for people who are living in cars, or riding the El trains to find shelter. Nancy Ford, the development director at West Suburban PADS, which coordinates programs and services for the homless in the Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park area, noted that the latter two means mask the real magnitude of homelessness. The effort, required by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, also will help determine if …

The makers of Tamiflu, which slows down flu symptoms, reported a shortage of the drug, according to Reuters. The CDC is reporting that the Great Lakes region is the nation's hardest hit with about 60 percent of people checked for the flu testing positive. Google's Flu Trends page classified the flu rate in …
