Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, Oak Parker Wins Gingerbread Home Contest

Amateur pastry chef Shannon Nowicki takes top prize at annual Chicago competition.

Shannon Nowicki, this year's top chef at the fifth annual Gingerbread House Competition held at Chicago's Hotel Sofitel, was born legally blind. The Oak Park resident has dealt with a juvenile form of macular degeneration since childhood, a disease damaging enough to keep her from driving or enjoying the finer sights the city has to offer, like the first snowfall of the season on Saturday. None of that took away from her victory, however — a win Nowicki called empowering. "To be able to do something like this is kind of exciting," Nowicki said as she stood guard over her award-winning edible entry. "It's like, OK, if I can win this, I can pretty much overcome anything." Nowicki beat out 17 other professional and amateur pastry chefs to …

Frank Lloyd Wright Designs Guide Gourmet Gingerbread Homes

Oak Park icon's home designs serve as inspiration for gingerbread house competition.

Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural genius manifests in many ways. Legos. 3-D Google renderings. A luxury furniture line. Now, it's gingerbread.  Pastry Chicago, a group of artistan pastry lovers, are using the beloved Oak Park iconoclast's architecture as a guideline for its fifth annual student gingerbread house competition. The concept was the brainchild of Franco Pacini, director of The French Pastry School. The contest is open to amateurs and culinary students alike. Organizers say all parts of the homes "must be edible with the exception of interior lighting and display board," and entries will be judged on detail of decoration, representation of theme, structure and puncuality and professionalism.  Judging takes place Dec. 4 …
