Brooks Middle School production opens Friday.
BRAVO, Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School's fine and performing arts department, will take visitors on an extraordinary journey when the school presents, "Once on this Island." The third production of the season will be on stage for three performances at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, and at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at Brooks, 325 S. Kenilworth Ave. "Once on This Island" is a story within a story, told to calm a young girl during a storm. Set on a French Antilles mythical Caribbean island where class differences prevail, it’s a fable about a peasant girl plucked from just such a storm by the gods and sheltered in a tree. Faith Cole, Lindsay Pietrzak step up into new roles at District 97.
Two Oak Park Elementary School District 97 teachers were promoted into bigger roles this week. The appointments of Faith Cole to the assistant principal role at Percy Julian Middle School and Lindsay Pietrzak to assistant prinicpal at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School were confirmed by the District 97 school board at Tuesday's meeting. Cole, an Oak Park native who attended Julian, takes over for Sam LeDeaux, who was appointed as principal of Horace Mann Elementary School back in May. LeDeaux took over for Nimisha Kumar, who announced her resignation in March after allegations surfaced that school staffers may have altered Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT) forms after they were submitted by students. For the third straight year students from Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School got huge bravos from the judges and walked away with some top honors and serious recognition during a recent national theater festival.` BRAVO – the school’s fine arts and performing arts program – won a coveted Outstanding Production for “Schoolhouse Rock, Live Jr,” during the 2012 Junior Theater Festival. The three-day extravanganza, devoted to musical theater for young people, was from Jan. 13 through Jan. 15 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.
