State Closes Fenwick Pool

State health officials close school pool, future uncertain as inspection process unfolds.

State health officials have closed the pool at Fenwick High School, saying the school failed to prove they've complied with a new state safety standard. A list released this month by the The Illinois Department of Public Health shows roughly 500 facilities, including municipal, school, public, condominium and hotel pools that haven't complied with a state law mirroring the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Act, which was designed to prevent drowning deaths after a 7-year-old girl became trapped underwater by the strong suction of a hot tub drain and drowned in 2002. That law requires pool operators, such as park districts, to install types of pool drain covers prevent dangerous suction power that can cause swimmers to become stuck. The state's…

OPRF Softball Gains Revenge Against Fenwick

After losing to Friars during regular season, Huskies beat them 2-0 in the Class 4A regional semifinals.

Oak Park-River Forest senior Erin Flanagan had one thought when she came to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh of a scoreless game. “No way this is my last game,” she told herself. Flanagan singled into center field to score Becky Barron from second base and then scored on Maureen Puccetti’s double. That was all the offense that the Huskies and pitcher Sarafina Andreoli needed to edge Fenwick 2-0 in the Class 4A OPRF regional semifinals Friday afternoon. It was a welcomed feel-good moment for the Huskies (11-21), who are experiencing their first sub-.500 season in coach Mel Kolbusz’s 19 seasons. “It’s awesome,” Flanagan said of winning the big game, which was postponed for two days by rain. “We lost to them the last time we …

Fenwick Softball Finds Relief In Victory

Friars snap six-game losing streak with 6-2 win versus St. Viator.

The noise emanating from the Fenwick girls softball team’s dugout in the bottom of the fifth told the story. The Friars came alive after breaking a tie with three runs in the inning. The offensive outburst brought much-needed relief in the form of a 6-2 East Suburban Catholic Conference triumph over St. Viator Thursday at the Priory in River Forest. “It was definitely a big relief, you know,” winning pitcher Olivia Soja said of the rally that enabled the Friars to snap a six-game losing streak. “It’s just nice to finally have some pressure taken off.” “It was a slump that I think every team goes through,” said Friars shortstop Natalie Marotta, who went two for three and scored twice. “It’s just something you’ve got to come out of. It’s …

In Local Softball Rivalry, It's Friars 4, Huskies 2

Sophomore Olivia Soja RBI triple in the seventh lifts Friars over host Oak Park-River Forest.

Olivia Soja didn't let youth stand in her way. The sophomore came through like a veteran for Fenwick when she tripled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, and the Friars tacked on another run in the inning to edge host Oak Park-River Forest 4-2 as the programs renewed their softball rivalry Tuesday afternoon. “Somebody had to get a hit,” Soja said. “I thought I might as well do it now.” Alexandra Tomasek sparked the two-run seventh for the Friars with a one-out double into center. Soja followed by launching her triple deep down the right-field line to give her team a 3-2 lead. “I haven’t been hitting as good as I’d like to so this was nice to finally get a good hit that means something,” Soja said. Natalie Marotta lined a …
