Effort between Bellwood, Berwyn, Forest Park, Maywood and Oak Park and was created to address the high foreclosure rates in Maywood and Bellwood.
Seven affordable homes are now for sale in Maywood and Bellwood, the West Cook County Housing Collaborative has announced. The homes, six in Bellwood and one in Maywood, will be made affordable to buyers with incomes at or below eighty percent of the area's median income. A down payment subsidy of up to $10,000 will also be provided. This program is an effort between Bellwood, Berwyn, Forest Park, Maywood and Oak Park and was created to address the high foreclosure rates in these communities. In addition, 21 homes will be available in Maywood, Bellwood and Forest Park by the end of 2013. Call Marz Timms at 708-771-5801 for more information.

Crime and corruption are often associated with our neighboring community to the west, but a video by Tom Kus, chairman of the Maywood Historic Preservation Commission, shows off some of the beautiful architecture in the village.
A reader sent in a video today that I'd like to share with our readers. The video was initially sent to WBEZ by Tom Kus, chairman of the Maywood Historic Preservation Commission, and published on the WBEZ site recently. Maywood is often framed in the media by its crime, and as mentioned in the WBEZ article, the municipal mismanagement. But it's also an old community with a rich tradition of beautiful architecture—as highlighted in this piece. Fans of Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park's architecture will be interested by this video profiling some of Maywood's most famous homes in a variety of architectural styles. My grandmother grew up in Maywood, and would frequently go to Oak Park on weekends with friends—often hanging out at …

Elmhurst man, busted for dodging train fare, spits on Metra officials.
An Elmhurst man was spitting mad after Metra employees busted him for ditching his train fare, authorities said. Michael Robertson, 25, boarded an eastbound train at 9:44 p.m. Thursday in Melrose Park and immediately went into the car's bathroom, police said. When the train arrived at the River Forest station, Robertson tried to run away but was stopped by two Metra officials. Roberston pushed the pair to the ground, spat on them and then ran away, police said. Authorities gave nearby police departments and stores his description, and he was spotted by a gas station employee and later arrested in Maywood about an hour later. He was charged with three counts of felony aggravated battery to transit employees and one count of theft of …

Festival spokesperson promises full array of top performers at weekend event.
Earlier this month, organizers of the Woodstars Festival approached Hillside village officials with an idea for a festival that included an all-star lineup of Salt-n-Pepa, Boyz II Men and Lil' Wayne — none of which appear on the current bill. Now, speculation continues to mount about which top-tier acts will actually show up this weekend in Maywood. Asked about the speculation on acts showing up or not, spokesperson Randy Bonds said all scheduled performers will be there. “As far as the events, all the acts are performing,” he said. “If anyone wants to question that, they can come out and see for themselves.” Related: Cops, Communities Prepare for Woodstars Festival Still, many websites for the headlining acts, including Twista, Nelly, …
Politicians, police blast hasty planning of hip-hop fest and carnival.
In preparations for a hastily planned hip-hop festival, authorities will descend upon Maywood in droves, arriving by police cruiser, ATV and horseback. An estimated 20,000 people are expected pass through the four-day Woodstars Summer Carnival and Music Festival, which began Thursday and will run through Sunday at Proviso East High School, located at First Avenue between Washington and Madison streets. Law enforcement officials across the Chicagoland area say they’ve been blindsided by short preparation time for the festival, which promises some of the biggest names in hip-hop such Nelly, Faith Evans and Naughty By Nature.
