Several vying to be River Forest trustee; River Forest library board will have to name one person to its board.
Candidates will vie to become village president in Oak Park and River Forest and there will be a contest for trustee in the latter community this spring. One other race in Oak Park will be competitive in the April 9 election as five people will be running for four seats on the library board, according to filing information provided by both communities. Three of them are incumbents. Several races will not be competitive including contests for Oak Park trustee and village clerk, park board in both communities and Oak Park Township. Information was not available on a slate for River Forest Township. Voluntary dismissal comes nearly 18 months after initial appeal filed.
A lawsuit that sought to toss out the results of Elementary District 97's successful tax rate referendum has finally been dismissed by an Illinois Appellate Court. After months of granting extensions to Taxpayers United of America to file documents related to the case and other matters, a three-judge panel entered the order Dec. 7. Documents related to this case are filed as PDFs. The motion to withdraw was filed by Andrew Spiegel, who represented Noel Kuriakos, an Oak Park resident and Herbert Sorock, from Wilmette who filed suits against their respective districts shortly after their referendums were approved in April 2011. Other moves to block the referendum from taking effect were also blocked. A Cook County Court judge in late May …

Packets containing petitions and other election information are available at the respective administrative offices or on the State Board of Elections website. Filing dates are from Dec. 17 to Dec. 24. Slates have already announced for Oak Park and River Forest municipal races, to be held on the same day. Here are other contests on the ballot. Middle schoolers involved in different incidents within a 24-hour period.
Two Percy Julian Middle School students have been charged with aggravated assault in connection with separate incidents involving weapons, police said Friday. One, which took place on the playground at Longfellow School, 715 Highland Ave., involved a knife; the second, at the Middle School, 420 S. Ridgeland Ave., involved a starter, or fake, pistol, district officials and police said. “These types of incidents are relatively rare in our school district. Unfortunately these took place within 24 hours of each other,” said Elementary District 97 spokesman Chris Jasculca. Between 3 and 4 p.m. on Nov. 16, an argument between an 11-year-old fifth grader at Longfellow and a 14-year-old eighth grader at Julian escalated after the older boy started…

Procedural move in appellate court will have little impact on the status of the case, attorneys on both sides agree.
Taxpayers United of America can seek one appeal against Oak Park Elementary District 97 and Wilmette District 39 instead of two, according to an order issued last week by the First District Illinois Appellate Court. TUA filed an appeal last month after Cook County Circuit Court judges dismissed both cases, which in effect sought to overturn the results of the districts’ successful tax referendums in April. Related: More Referendum Lawsuit Coverage The move will have very little impact on the issues at hand, said Andrew Spiegel, TUA’s attorney and Rob Swain, District 97’s attorney. “The appellate court realizes that both cases involve the same issues, so it decided to lump the two together and decide it once,” Swain said. “They just won’t …

Case so far has cost as much as educating three students, district says.
Oak Park Elementary District 97 will return to court – and be forced to spend more money - as anti-tax advocates who unsuccessfully attempted to overturn results of the April referendum have filed an appeal. An appeal was filed on July 7. Noel Kuriakos and Taxpayers United of America will now try to convince judges in the First District Appellate Court that ballot language intentionally misled voters about the impact of the referendum on their property taxes and that the district failed to use the equalizer in determining the real cost to the taxpayers. Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva dismissed the case July 1 with prejudice, meaning that the only action that TUA can take in this case is to appeal. The initial suit was filed …
