Rash of Car Burglaries Hits Oak Park

In some incidents, thieves opened unlocked cars and ransacked them to find hidden items. Another car had its tires punctured and profanity scratched into the hood.

Keep your cars locked and remove your valuables as Oak Park police have reported a rash of incidents involving automobiles over a three-day period. Over three days, thieves ransacked cars looking for hidden items or found them in glove compartments. In several instances, the cars were unlocked. In addition two cars were vandalized during the same period. Here’s how the incidents break down: Sometime between Feb. 16 and 17, a closed, but unlocked vehicle parked in the carport of a home in the 100 block of North Harvey Avenue was ransacked. No loss was reported. An car parked in the 1000 block of South Cuyler Avenue was broken into by unknown means. No loss was reported. The incident took place sometime between Feb. 15 and 16. Oak Park Man Charged With Hate Crime After Punching 13-Year-Old

Oak Park police arrested Luisito B. Navarro two days after he allegedly punched a 13-year-old boy from Cicero in the face and made comments about his race.

Oak Park police reported this evening that they arrested and later charged a 48-year-old Oak Park man after he allegedly hit a 13-year-old boy from Cicero in the face and made comments about the boy's race. Luisito B. Navarro, of the 1100 Block of south Gunderson, was charged with aggravated battery and a hate crime, both felonies, on Jan. 10. The arrest stems from an incident police said occurred in an alley behind the 1100 block of south Gunderson at about 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 8. The 13-year-old told police he was walking with a 12-year-old friend down an alley in the block as Navarro was getting into his car. Police Investigate More Abduction Attempts in Oak Park

Police are investigating a report that a man tried to lure three teen boys into his van near Harlem Avenue and Lake Street on Wednesday.

ABC7 Chicago is reporting that police are investigating a new incident involving attempted child abductions in Oak Park. According to ABC7, a man tried to lure three teenage boys into his van near Harlem Avenue and Lake Street on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at around 4 p.m. One of the teens, Malcolm Crawford, 14, described the man as a white male wearing a grey sweatshirt and a black skullcap. He told reporters that he was walking with two friends to another friend's house when the man approached them in a grey/blue minivan and told them he was going to the same place they were and asked if they wanted a ride. THURSDAY, DEC. 27 Donovan A. Bray, 20, of Oak Park was arrested on an active warrant out of Winnebago County for violation of probation for criminal aggravated sexual assault, police said. He was apprehended after a traffic stop in the 0-100 block of Harrison Street. A package containing three piggy banks was taken from the front porch of a home in the 300 block of Home Avenue. Area police will be cracking down on DUIs and seat belt violations through New Year’s Eve to make it safer to drive on village streets. Enforcement, designed to curb traffic accidents and fatalities, is part of the state's Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket programs. Intensified enforcement effort will focus on the nighttime hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., when a disproportionate number of traffic deaths occur. According to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), midnight to 3 a.m. is the deadliest time on Illinois roadways. Oak Park Police Seize Heroin, Cocaine in Unrelated Drug Arrests

All three incidents took place over a 24-hour period; one arrest took place in Forest Park.

Three men have been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance in three unrelated drug arrests over less than 24 hours on Dec. 27, Oak Park police said Friday. Two of the arrests came after traffic stops on Austin Boulevard and South Harlem Avenue. Unsecured and unattended packages containing diapers, baby wipes, a teething blanket, a children’s book and a toy telephone was stolen outside of a home in the 800 block of South Grove Avenue. Police Report 3 Recent Incidents Involving Teens and Strangers

Oak Park police are reminding parents to talk with children about what to do if they are approached by a stranger and three recent reports.

Oak Park police are asking parents and school officials to talk with their children again about what to do if they are approached by a stranger. Police said in a letter to area school officials today, that they are asking them to talk with children after receiving three reports of individuals trying to talk with young teens. A 13-year-old girl reported twice that the same man had attempted to talk to her recently while walking down Harlem Avenue near Chicago Avenue. In another incident, a 13-year-old boy reported that a woman had offered to give him a ride. SUNDAY, DEC. 9 Police reported that between Dec. 8-9, someone spray painted red or brown spray paint on three separate cars—in the 700, 900 and 1000 blocks of Washington—at some point overnight. Estimated damages ranged from $300-500. An Oak Park resident reported that someone tried to break into their home in the 1100 block of north Elmwood overnight between Dec. 8-9. A glass pane in a basement window was found shattered. However, once inside, the offender set off an alarm and ran out the back door of the home. Estimated damages were $60.
