Police are reminding residents to register their bikes and keep them locked. Greenline Wheels is selling bike locks at cost during May for Bike Safety Month.
As the temperature rises, the number of bike thefts in the area tends to as well. In the past two weeks police have reported a number of stolen bicycles, and River Forest police sent a reminder to residents to keep their bikes locked and also to register them with the department. When a bike is registered with a local police department, it's entered into a database and issued a sticker to identify the owner. River Forest police chief Gregory Weiss said officers assigned to the midnight shift routinely see overhead garage doors left open, and will attempt to notify the owners to help prevent a crime. THURSDAY, MAY 16 Whitney O. Westbrooks, 23, of the 2700 block of Cherie Lane in Ottawa, was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police said a officer saw a plastic baggie fall from her shirt in the 600 block of N. Austin. She was found in possession of two baggies containing less than 1 gram of heroin, police said. A wallet was taken from a gym bag when it was left unattended at a business in the 800 block of North Boulevard. The wallet contained about $300 in cash, misceallaneous credit cards and an ID. LA GRANGE A woman caused a disturbance at Walgreens, 2 N. La Grange Road, around 1:58 p.m. after her insurance declined to cover a prescription she was picking up for her mother, police said. The woman called police because Walgreens wouldn’t give her the medication unless she paid for it out of pocket. The officer told her this was a matter between her, Walgreens and the insurance company. She became disruptive, called the officer a few names and stormed off, the report said. Three girls who looked like they were in eighth grade took bricks from the yard of a vacant property in the 900 block of South 8th Avenue, police said.
