Review: Piggyback Opens in Forest Park, Great for a Night on the Town

Piggyback Tavern is now open in Forest Park featuring barbequed meats, delicious sides and strong cocktails.

Piggyback Tavern: barbequed meat in a cozy setting. I could end the review right there and it would be enough, right? If I did, it would probably still bring in for a visit, but it wouldn't do justice to the expansive and varied menu of appetizers, entrees and drinks available at the new Forest Park BBQ joint. Although Piggyback is brought to you by the same owner of Lake Street Bar + Grill in Oak Park, the vibe and menu is decidedly different. When I talked with Jason Kurosaki, head chef at both restaurants, back in October for a preview article on the new dining establishment, he assured me that Piggyback was all about the staples and the basics.  "We want to do BBQ really well, not reinvent the wheel. The Buzz About New Home and Garden Business in Oak Park

Bee Home and Garden in Oak Park recently opened Chicago Avenue in Oak Park.

A new shop with an eye towards vintage house wares has recently opened on Chicago Avenue in Oak Park. Bee Home and Garden, located at 128 Chicago Ave., will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. The new boutique is the first for longtime Oak Park resident Colleen Maia and offers a little bit of everything, Forest Leaves reported. Calling her ware a collection of things she finds pretty, Maia said the store offers vintage china, furniture, jewelry and more. The inventory is still growing as Maia heads out to local estate sales looking for new goods to stock the shop. Madison Street to Get Gussied Up For the Holidays

Holiday Walk in Forest Park will feature sleigh rides, photo-ops with Santa and local business open houses.

Madison Street will be infused with the holiday spirit Nov. 30 during the annual Holiday Walk. Loads of holiday-related events will be served at starting at 6 p.m. when Santa arrives by fire engine to light to Christmas Tree in Constitution Court at Thomas Avenue and Madison Street. You can visit with Santa and a photo taken from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Forest Park National Bank & Trust, 7348 Madison St. During the rest of the evening, folks can catch a horse-drawn carriage ride at Beloit and Madison and Marengo and Madison. Program Offers the Best to Forest Parkers

Village program promotes local shopping and business.

It could end up being one of the best buys Forest Park has to offer. Forest Park BEST is an online resource that promotes local business and keeps folks who are enrolled in the loop on which shops around town have bargains. What does BEST stand for? Buy, Eat, Shop, Think Local. It was started a year ago as a way to get people to think local when they shop, Commissioner Tom Mannix said. About 30 shops from thorughout the community are taking part, said Village Administrator Tim Gillian. Here's how it works: All folks have to do is sign up. They'll get a small card that will loop on their key ring and a wallet-sized card. All they have to do is check on line for the bargains, go to the shop, show the card and they'll be able to take …

Black Friday Starts Early and Stays Late for Madison Street Shoes

Big deals afoot throughout the weekend.

If you are looking to spend Thursday trying to break records on the number of pairs of shoes you own, a local shop will have some real bargains. Madison Street Shoes, 7500 Madison St., in fact will be offering the same deal from now through Sunday. Everything in the store will be 40 percent off on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Shop Local Day Saturday and on Sunday. That includes shoes, clothing and accessories. The store will be open from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. (depending on how traffic goes, an employee said). Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. There may be a few give-aways, but you have to pop in to find out what they are. The Brown Cow Serves Up Black Friday Waffle Treats

After a late night of shopping (or for those fueling up for a long Friday) stop by The Brown Cow in Forest Park for their annual waffle sunday bar.

If you're not still stuffed from Thanksgiving dinner the morning after, a local ice cream parlor has a treat sure to draw crowds to Forest Park on Black Friday. The Brown Cow will be holding its annual Black Friday Waffle Bar from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Nov. 23. "It was started as a way for shoppers to refuel while heading out to the local shops," said owner Connie Brown. Shanahan's Hosts Lobsterfest This Weekend

With so much emphasis on turkeys this season, it can be refreshing to look off the land and into the water—for lobster. The pilgrims wouldn't eat it. According to the American Spectator, when they arrived in Massachusettes in 1620, it was considered food only suitable for the very poor.
