Fenwick Teacher Gets Big Win on Jeopardy

Fenwick High School teacher Colby Burnett takes part in Jeopardy Teacher's Edition.

Being an AP World History teacher has to give you a certain leg up on a show like Jeopardy! It appears it was helpful for Fenwick High School AP World History teacher Colby Burnett, who won the game on Friday, Nov. 16. Burnett, also a graduate of Fenwick, appeared on the game show as part of Jeopardy! Teacher's Edition. The two-week long competition is billed as, "the country's brightest educators," engaged in a battle of wits. According to the Chicago Tribune, Burnett won't be keeping the money he wins as a contestant on the show—he'll be giving it to his mom! Burnett plans to move his mom, who currently lives in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, back to Oak Park. It's the least he can do, Burnett told the Tribune, after his mom worked the …

Oak Park Teachers Asked to Consider Salary Freeze

District 97 issues letter raising possibility of pay freeze next year to help reduce part of expected $6 million deficit if referendum fails.

Oak Park Elementary School District 97 Supt. Al Roberts has asked teachers to consider a salary freeze next year in order to save $1.4 million, according to a letter to teachers circulated by the local teacher's union. Oak Park Teachers'Association President Sue Tresselt recently distributed the letter to District 97 teachers outlining Roberts' request to consider a salary freeze. The school board is pursuing a referendum question in April that aims to raise money through taxes. School officials have said the district could run out of money for operating expenses by 2013. By 2015, the district could face a budget deficit. If the referendum fails, the district would need to make more than $6 million in cuts, according to a public …
