Cleanup Begins After Club Fire

Danny Williamson stood outside the Flat Top Grill, turning away would-be diners and asking them to keep an eye on the restaurant's Facebook page instead. That, he said, would be the best way to learn about re-opening plans after the business was shuttered last week, the result of a fire at the next-door Velvet Rope Ultra Lounge. The cleanup, he said, will take "weeks." And while the damage and ensuing cleanup is a major setback, Williamson said it could've been much worse. Fire Destroys Velvet Rope

Oak Park night club damaged during early morning fire.

Please visit this link for our updated coverage.  Fire crews remain on the scene of an early morning fire that badly damaged the Velvet Rope nightclub and surrounding downtown Oak Park businesses. Authorities were called to the club, 728 Lake St., around 6:30 a.m. The club suffered "severe smoke damage," said Oak Park Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Ken Klemm. Two adjacent businesses, Klay Oven restaurant and Flat Top Grill, also suffered smoke damage. "We're investigating those [businesses] as we speak," Klemm said. No injuries were reported.
