The nominees for Athlete of the Week: New Trier's Maggie Lyon, Deerfield's Zach Cole, Niles West's Ryan Miller, Niles North's Billy Voitik and Highland Park's Jake Zuckerman.
More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22: Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. More than 15,000 votes were counted last week and Deerfield's Alex Sacks was proclaimed this week's Athlete of the Week. Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. The senior had four points in the fourth quarter to lead Deerfield in a late-game comeback. The Deerfield basketball star received more than 7,500 votes, or about 48 percent. Honorable Mention: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. Almost 1,000 votes were cast in last week's poll and Evanston's Josh Irving came out on top. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 5- Dec. 11: Michael Alfieri, sophomore, boys basketball, Deerfield – Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 overtime win. Mark Johnson, senior, basketball forward, Glenbrook North – Johnson had a career-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds in the Spartans’ 67-39 victory over Niles North last week. Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 21- Nov. 27: Erin Purdy is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. Garnering about 56 percent of the vote, Purdy topped a deep field that included local basketball and football players. There were nearly 10,000 votes, but Purdy's state championship win in diving gave her the edge and made her this week's winner. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 21- Nov. 27 are: Erin Purdy, senior, girls diving, Deerfield – Purdy captured the state championship in the diving competition with a total of 405.95 points. She became Deerfield’s second diving state champion, following Christina Loukas, who won three straight years from 2001-2003. Purdy had finished in the top five as a sophomore and junior, but finally topped the podium in her last year. Athlete of the Week for Oct. 31 - Nov. 6: Peter Pujals ran away with North Shore's first contest for Patch Athlete of the Week. More than 2,300 readers voted last week, but the junior football player from Loyola Academy received 1233 votes, capturing 54 percent of the total. (See results below) The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6, were: Peter Pujals, junior, football wide receiver, Loyola Academy and this week’s winner – Pujals had the best game of his career, catching nine passes for 181 yards in Loyola’s 29-0 win over Dunbar in the second round of the playoffs. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6: Alexis Melchiorre, senior, girls swimming, Deerfield – Melchiorre helped lead Deerfield to a third consecutive Central Suburban League North swimming championship last weekend. The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win. Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend. Later completed the three-mile course in 14 minutes, 17 seconds.The …
