Sculpture Walk Returns to Downtown Oak Park

The 2013 Sculpture Walk runs through September, featuring 12 sculptures around downtown Oak Park.

The annual sculpture walk in downtown Oak Park opened June 1 for the 2013 season, spotlighting 12 pieces of art in pedestrian-friendly areas of the village.

Artists were selected for the sculpture walk following a juried competition. Sculptures in the exhibit are constructed from a variety of materials, including steel, clay, glass and wood, according to the Village of Oak Park.

The 12 sculptures are located within a four-block radius near Oak Park’s Frank Lloyd Wright and Hemingway historic districts.

“One of the great things about public art is its ability to create a conversation and encourage people to pay attention to their surroundings,” sculpture walk manager Colleen Berg said in a statement. “With downtown Oak Park as the backdrop to this year’s walk, we hope to engage a broader audience and increase the visibility of public art in our community.”

The sculpture walk will be open to visitors through Sept. 2. After the event closes, the Village may consider purchasing one or more pieces of art, according to the Village of Oak Park.

The sculpture walk is organized by the Public Art Advisory Commission, comprised of citizen volunteers who promote the acquisition and placement of public art that reflects diversity and artistic expression, and enhances the esthetic environment of the Village.

A brochure of the walk is available online at here and at the Oak Park Visitors’ Center, 1010 Lake St. For more information, e-mail sculpturewalk@oak-park.us.
