COMMENTS: Is the D97 iPad Rollout Coming Too Fast?

Patch asked readers whether they think a fall rollout of the one-to-one technology initiative in Oak Park District 97 would be too fast.

Oak Park Elementary School District 97 on Aug. 20 will vote on the 1:1 Technology Initiative, a plan to reach a one-to-one ratio of tech devices to students in grades 3-8 by 2015.

The plan would be implemented when students return to school this fall, starting with iPads for fifth graders only. But during an Aug. 6 board meeting, some board members expressed concern about the timing of the rollout, and that it could catch parents returning from summer vacations off-guard.

So, we asked Patch readers on Facebook: With iPad-focused professional development planned for teachers, and an orientation planned for parents, do you have any issues with the district starting this initiative in the next month or so? Is there any reason they should take more time?

Here's what people said:

  • Jane said, "Roosevelt Middle school did the same roll out for 5th graders and it was very smooth."
  • Elana said, "It is about time!"
  • Sinead said, "No complaints at all as long as they don't forget the students in dedicated special education classrooms."
  • Todd said, "The district is already behind if you ask me."
  • Joel said, "The district is behind? Behind who? Most school districts in this state could only dream of an initiative like this."
  • Amy said, "I think this is a silly waste of money."
  • Patti said, "It worked in Tampa and everyone seemed happy."
  • Dave said, "I think even more money should be spent on the Whittier playground."
